Asphalt Paving

Most Americans are familiar with the black, hard, cement-like substance that is called asphalt. However, they are not aware of how it is made and all the things it can be used for.

Asphalt is made through the distillation of crude petroleum and contains additives like sand, filler, and bitumen which have to go through a process of drying to create the correct consistency of asphalt. Asphalt is also sometimes referred to as binder.

These substances are then heated and mixed, a process that is known as “hot mix.” Asphalt is environmentally friendly in the sense that it is recyclable and can preserve the world’s resources.

The process of heat mixing happens in a fixed or mobile mixing plant. Throughout Europe it is estimated that 305 million tones of hot and cold asphalt were generated.

Asphalt is well known for its use in construction of roads and highways. This substance is also considered to be the quick fix for damage roads because of how little time it takes to create and how easy it is to place.

However, it can be used in a variety of different areas. Asphalt is also used to patch up and add finishing touches to bike tracks, airport runways, driveways, walking paths, landscaping and many other types of tracks.

Asphalt does age and show wear and tear throughout time. There are many things that can cause early aging of asphalt.

The first factor is the sun. The sun dries up the water that collects on asphalt during the night which causes the asphalt to crack as it dries out.

If the asphalt already has crack the sun will make them bigger. The sun leaks out the natural oils from the asphalt.

The second factor is raveling, which is the decomposition of the binder that holds the aggregate together. When raveling occurs the asphalt becomes very brittle and will develop cracks.

The third factor is water. When water enters cracks it erodes all of the binders and fines which keep the aggregate together.

The fourth factor is grease. Oil, grease and gasoline weaken asphalt paving when it is cleaned with water, leaving the asphalt susceptible to increased water damage.

In order to promote the lifetime of asphalt it is important to fill in cracks when they are developed. This will greatly reduce the asphalts susceptibility to these damaging factors.

There are four main benefits to using asphalt over other paving substances. It is economical, durable, safe, and recyclable.

Asphalt is very low in cost both for the materials and labor to install. It also dries very quickly to prevent great inconvenience.

This substance is relatively weather resistant and can withstand high and low traffic situations. Asphalt can also be designed to fit a variety home building or landscaping project.

Asphalt provides cars skid resistances, little splash back, and a distinct difference between the road and the road markings to keep drivers safe. It also has a smooth and pleasing finish.

Asphalt usually comes in the typical black or grey colors. However, there are many other styles available to designers.

For example, a few of the designs available include chocolate brown, smokey grey, brown brick, pale terracotta, slate green, pure white, red rose, and sandy sand. These colors can be mixed and matched to create interesting designs.

Asphalt is much cheaper than brick pavers or concrete, so it is an ideal substance for using around the home. If using it around your home be sure to select a color that will enhance the color of your home, surrounding gardens, the type of home you live in, and any other colored walkways.

The colors in asphalt can wear out fairly quickly due to foot traffic and little or low quality maintenance. However, maintaining the color is not an expensive operation.

Asphalt is a very useful substance that can add the final touch to your home landscaping. It can be both pleasing to the eye and practical.
